Antoinette was selected as a match for Edvard by his mother Adeliza of Arendaal, Empress of the North in a bid to ensure the entry of the KNH trading company into Lorraine. The marriage was also an important one, however, since it was the first time that a prospective Emperor of the North married a Catholic.

The marriage was a haven of domestic bliss. The couple attracted criticism for their tendency to retire to the country away from court life. Antoinette died in childbirth at the age of 28. Although he mourned her death, Edvard later married Catrina of Warre.
