Royal Intermarriages have been a key strategy of Dynastic Politics employed by the Monarchs of Arendaal since the 8th century to cement alliances with other European powers and to ensure Aren influence and prestige among the Kingdoms of Europe. Such is the prolific nature of Aren dynastic marriages that they have given rise to the much quoted phrase: "Let others make war; you, fortunate Arendaal, marry".
The prevelence of intermarriage with other powers has meant that at some point (usually for several centuries, and even into the present day) the Aren Royal Family has been related to almost every major Royal House in Europe. Many European Houses have sought legitimacy by marrying Aren Royalty. Since the middle ages, Aren Princesses have become particularly famous as paragons of beauty and gentility. Due to the relatively small pool of potential consorts, interbreeding has always been a fear and issue amidst the Aren Royals, and as such they are forbidden by law to marry anyone more closely related to them than a second cousin (though even this level of relation is frowned upon).
